Frank Lloyd Wright's California "Children of Earth and Sun"

Frank Lloyd Wright Buildings in California

Houses and public buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and still standing in California. Those with a red place marker are open to the public and some offer tours.

"Buildings, too, are children of Earth and Sun," according to legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. And where better to build them than the sunny Golden State? If you're a fan of Wright's work - or of great architecture in general, his California creations can form the center of some great day trips - or a longer vacation.

In the 1920s, as Frank Lloyd Wright's career and vision, he began probing new ideas and he wanted to bring his work westward.

Beginning with a design for George C. Stewart's Montecito house in 1909, and ending with the Pilgrim Congregational Church in 1957, Frank Lloyd Wright placed his signature on the California landscape.

In total, 26 buildings Frank Lloyd Wright designed in California are still standing and only two have been lost: Residence B at Hollyhock House and Wright's Harper Avenue Studio in Los Angeles. The map above shows their locations and the interactive version is here

The work Frank Lloyd Wright did in California was important. In fact, of the 17 Frank Lloyd Wright structures designated by the American Institute of Architects as most representative of his contribution to American culture, three are located in California: Hollyhock House, the V.C. Morris Gift Shop in San Francisco and the Hanna House in Palo Alto.

Most of Frank Lloyd Wright's California designs were private residences, but he also created California office buildings, shops, and a government center. You can find Frank Lloyd Wright public buildings in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Redding and San Rafael. The complete lists are on these pages:
